JANUARY 2024

Happy New Year, from Teach for Wellness!

We hope you enjoyed joyful, healthy, and restorative winter breaks, and that you’re settling back into your routines and classrooms with relative ease. Take a look at this month’s resources to ensure you and your students start the year off on the right foot!

  • Cold, wintery weather can often lead to unexpected indoor recess. Indoor play times can feel unstructured, noisy, disappointing, and overwhelming for students, which can bring up a host of emotions and challenges for students. Check out the Playworks Game Library to find activities that promote play and SEL skill-building, and focus on keeping all kids engaged.

Is your school looking to implement more SEL curriculum,
but overwhelmed with where to start?

Check out CASEL’s Program Guide for tips on how to align your team, identify your needs, and compare and select the right program for you!
January is a great time to focus on goal-setting as an SEL skill! Goal-setting, at all developmental levels, can help students practice self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and responsible decision making.

Consider supporting students in setting and tracking their own goals for the new year using the tips below!

  1. Encourage students to set both personal and academic goals.
  2. Offer different options for goal tracking. Maybe younger students are motivated and excited by sticker charts and visuals, and maybe older students want to incorporate technology in their goal-tracking.
  3. Build monitoring goals into your classroom routines for the next month or so. This can be a great grounding exercise at the beginning or end of class!
